OUR HISTORY

BACupNorth, the Black Advocacy Coalition upNorth, was formed in 2020 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, amidst the global outcry and protests following the tragic death of George Floyd in the United States. His death highlighted systemic racism and inequality, sparking worldwide movements demanding justice, accountability, and change.

In Yellowknife, the Black community and allies came together, recognizing the need for a unified platform to address the unique challenges faced by Black individuals in the North. This collective effort led to the creation of BACupNorth, an organization dedicated to advocating for equality, raising awareness of systemic issues, and celebrating Black culture and contributions.

Since its formation, BACupNorth has worked to promote inclusivity, organize community events such as Black History Month celebrations, and initiate projects aimed at mental health, capacity building, and education for the Black community in the Northwest Territories. The organization continues to serve as a voice for advocacy and a hub for empowerment and cultural preservation in the region.
